The next thing you want to do when it comes to getting a new mobile phone is to find a good pay monthly deal. There are so many on offer that it might seem slightly confusing, but it’s actually easier than you think as long as you understand how the contracts are put together. It is better to have a pay monthly deal then be on pay-as-you-go, because your handset will keep working even if you do go accidentally over one of your allowances whereas with a pay-as-you-go handset the phone will just stop working which in an emergency might not be great. 

So basically, you have three different allowances to consider your talk time, texts, and data. As mentioned if you do go over any of these the phone keeps working, but you are charged every man right so it’s not ideal and you really do need to make sure you have enough allowance to cover you for your usage in the month. The good news is that talk time and texts are often sold as unlimited, which means you are in no danger of going over these two allowances.

So this gives you time to focus on the data element of your deal, and it is this one that can get particularly expensive if you do not make sure you have enough. When you are connected to Wi-Fi, you are not using any data. However, once you leave the building and switch to 4G or 5G, your data usage begins. Most handsets run processes in the background that check the Internet periodically, and although these aren’t data-intensive, they use a small amount. 

This is why it is unusual to see any deal that doesn’t offer data as part of the package. Even if you only have a small requirement, it is better that you have some than none. Once you actually start using Internet processes on your handset, you will need more data each month. If you only do things like sending and receiving emails or occasionally using an app for satnav, you won’t need a massive allowance. 

If you enjoy streaming movies and music, or using your handset as a hotspot to allow other devices to connect to the Internet, you will need more. Big data deals are just that, a provision for customers who use a lot of data each month. You will find unlimited data deals on offer, but these will be more expensive again, but if you use your handset for the Internet and do not have Wi-Fi, it might be worth considering. Some network providers will allow you to carry over any data you don’t use to the next month or beyond however many simply just reset the counter, so it is worth also checking that if data is particularly important.

While you will see many cheap deals available, you should now understand that these are not necessarily the best for you. You will not actually save any money picking a deal that doesn’t cover what you use your phone for as you will just be paying extra charges every month. Be sure to look for a deal that offers you enough data that you are not in any danger of going over. There are other ways to make a contract cheaper, and this includes extending the length from 2 years to 3 years. 

Not all providers offer this; however, some do so it is worth shopping around. You need to remember that you will, therefore, be tied to that company for three years as breaking a contract early is very expensive, and it also means you will need to be happy with the same handset for the whole period. You can also look for things like cashback which gives you access to a more expensive contract for a lower price once the cashback has been applied to the account.

The other way to get a new handset is to purchase the phone on a Sim free deal. You pay market value for the phone and do not get a Sim card or pay monthly date attached to it. Obviously, in order for the handset to work, you do need to source a Sim card from somewhere else. Sometimes people on pay-as-you-go use this method to change their phone, but you do need to remember that premium flagship handsets will cost over £1000 upfront when bought as a sim free deal. However, a handset like this one will be cheaper, making this a great way to get your hands on a new phone.
