Rumours are flying when it comes to the new middle-class smartphone. Here's what we’ve heard so far:
  • Leaked that August 3rd will be the official launch date.
  • There will be no XL version of the Google Pixel 4a with a display size of 5.81 inch.
  • No support for wireless charging - shouldn’t this be a staple feature?
  • Possibly available colours include black handset with green button & Blue with a pink button.

Google has consistently delivered since the introduction of its pixel smartphones. The devices weren't all first class, especially the Pixel 4 which disappointed, but they still released them regularly. In the case of the Pixel 4a, however, coronavirus got in the way.

Where's the pixel 4a?

The Pixel 4a has been buzzing around in the rumour mill for months, and there were first reports of this at the beginning of the year. It should have actually been revealed in May as part of the Google I / O developer conference. But it was cancelled due to the corona and that meant a shift in the Pixel 4a launch.

But the introduction of the latest Google smartphone was apparently postponed several times, because experts have been waiting for a concrete sign of life for the Pixel 4a for weeks. In a week, however, it should definitely be ready, at least the usually well-informed Leaker Jon Prosser claims.

Prosser wrote on Twitter yesterday that August 3 would be the launch day. He is absolutely sure of that because he added a "100 percent" to the tweet . The Leaker also addresses the many postponements and delays and says: "The only question is: do you still care? Or did you delay the thing too much?"

Let’s take a look at what we know so far about the Google Pixel 4a.

The Handset

A Spanish YouTuber got his hands on a Pixel 4a two months ago and not only presented it in detail and showed all features available, but also ran an app to read out the specifications. This tells us that the display will have a size of exactly 5.81 inches , the camera will dissolve with 12.2 megapixels and the battery with over 3,080 mAh is very well equipped.

But the hands-on itself is also interesting because we see the smartphone in the hands of a user for the first time and can thus give an even better impression of what Google will shake out of its sleeve for a new device. It should be noted, however, that this was an early version at the time, and very small details may have changed. Perhaps due to the waiting time even bigger details, this can no longer be said exactly.

Google Pixel 4a: display and design

According to the pictures, the Pixel 4a is a 5.8-inch middle-class smartphone with a plastic housing and a fingerprint sensor on the back. On the front, at the top of the screen, you can see a punch hole that is likely to house the selfie cam. Despite the hole in the display, the Pixel 4a is anything but borderless if you believe the photos.

Processor and Operating System

The Snapdragon 730 or 765 should clock inside the Pixel 4a. The 4GB of RAM and Android 10 also ensure a smooth performance. The handset will feature a USB-C connection and a 3.5mm jack for headphones. In addition to this, on the back there is a square main camera, which is likely to consist of only one lens and one LED flash.

Camera Performance

As usual, the camera is also a major focus for the pixel smartphones of 2020. The Pixel 4a should master at least half a handful of new camera tricks, which could then also be rolled out to other Pixel smartphones using the feature drop. This applies at least to the highest quality level for video recording. As a leaked camera app has now revealed, the Pixel 4a and, in all likelihood, the Pixel 4 will enable video recording with 4K resolution and 60 FPS. Another teardown of the app revealed that the smartphone may have an optical zoom - and that will work with just a single camera lens.

Technically, the main camera on the back uses a Sony IMX363 sensor with a resolution of 12.2 megapixels, an aperture of f / 1.73 and 1.14 micrometer pixels. There is also a 65.6 degree field of view (FOV) and electronic and optical image stabilization (EIS and OIS). On the other hand, a Sony IMX355 sensor is used on the front, which has eight megapixels and an f / 2.0 aperture.

Price and release

One can only speculate about the exact release date being August 3rd. Google I / O 2020 was originally chosen as the time at the end of May. Now the internet giant had to cancel the conference due to the coronavirus and is now looking for a virtual way to bring the participants together anyway. It is difficult to predict whether the Google Pixel 4a will also be released as part of such a solution or as a live stream. The same applies to the price. Again, there is no reliable information that suggests the cost of the new Google smartphone. However, we will keep you up to date.
